Welcome to Launch Youniversity!

Leadership exists within an interesting tension. Great leaders are not only worthy of following today – we need to be able to trust that our leaders have a vision for the future.  As leaders, we’re all looking for ways and opportunities to lead people and create influence. We’re called not only to be really good right now, but also to plan to be great in the future. In today’s podcast, Shane and David are breaking down a talk Shane gave at this year’s Chick-fil-A 2020 planning session in Atlanta. How can we be our best today while working at becoming our best tomorrow?

Welcome to episode 150 of the Launch Youniversity Podcast.

Three Takeaways:

Start With Your “Why”

During your leadership journey, there will be moments when you are not your best, and are not interested in working at becoming your best. During these lulls, you can come back to your personal mission statement to remind yourself of exactly what it is you’re looking to build. David Farmer refers to these moments as friction – a force pushing in the opposite direction of where you want to go. Friction has to be overcome by a stronger force in order to keep us moving forward. Your purpose is the force to power you beyond friction.

Have Something to Look Forward To

We are all building towards something. When a construction crew begins work on a house, their objective is not to build for building’s sake. Instead, they look forward to a completed structure that will give shelter to whoever dwells inside. Your mission statement is the house you’re building. Those goals can be physical, emotional, spiritual, or family – but they are crucial to keeping us at our best and giving us a target at which to aim.

Chase Yourself

Who are you chasing? We all have role models who have informed our leadership journeys. It’s helpful to have someone to help you build your leadership framework and point you in the right direction from the start. But who should we be chasing? The only way to keep ourselves focused on being good now and better later is to chase ourselves. Set your sights on the leader you want to be in ten years, and ten years from now you can set your sights on the leader you’ll be in twenty-five.

Summary:

Welcome to Launch Youniversity! On this week’s episode, Shane Benson and David Farmer are together to discuss the life-saving magic of scripting. When most of us hear the word ‘scripting,’ we think of movies or television shows, but what Shane and David are talking about today is not referring to a pre-set narrative, but rather the automation of executable tasks. How can we bundle or automate the things we do in our daily work or personal lives in order to make it just a touch easier to move through our days. Shane and David tag team this week’s episode to give personal, real-life examples of how this idea can revolutionize your time management.

Know What You’re For: A Growth Strategy for Work, an Even Better Strategy for Life

Three Takeaways:

1. Understand the Power of Scripting

A script is essentially a budget for your time. A budget is essentially a plan – there may be some need to deviate from the plan, but the plan is set to establish intentionality. There is a great deal of power to be derived from being intentional. When you are able to script an outcome – and begin to take steps to script the process that leads to that outcome, your intention begins to turn toward reality. Your script can remove some friction from the process, making it easier to move from process to outcome. It can also create momentum within your process. Creating order and structure with a script can help to push your process forward, making it easier to accomplish your goals.

2.Scripts are Liberating

It can feel counterintuitive, but creating a structural framework around a process is liberating. In Bruce Arians’ The Quarterback Whisperer, he details his time working with former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer, who after coming back from injury was having a difficult time getting his feet under him. Arians suggested to Palmer that they script the first ten plays of every game with Palmer’s favorite plays from the Cardinals playbook. Those scripted plays took the pressure off Palmer, created momentum from the game’s outset, and assured that the Cardinals offense wouldn’t stall from the beginning. Ultimately, the creation of a script allowed the odds of success to swing in favor of the Arizona Cardinals, and Arians and Palmer would lead the Cardinals to a franchise-best season record that year.

3.Script Your Legacy

While scripting can be a revolutionary way to liberate your day-to-day experience, it can also have an incredible ripple effect on the rest of your life. Those of you with families can even look down the line and create a loose script for your family legacy. Do you have a child with a milestone birthday in the years to come? Maybe that can be a time for a larger-than-normal celebration. Any high-stress, high-emotion event is made easier with a plan, so taking time to script your legacy can bring comfort as you navigate the often turbulent waters of combining your personal and professional lives.

Summary:

On this week’s episode, we sat down with Rodney Bullard, Chick-Fil-A Corporate Social Responsibility Leader and Executive Director of the Chick-Fil-A Foundation. Rodney is a frequent public speaker as well as being the bestselling author of Heroes Wanted: Why the World Needs You to Live Your Heart Out. We talked with Rodney about what it means to be a “difference maker” in our lives and businesses. We were lucky to be able to have this conversation with Rodney and we know you’ll enjoy it as well!

Three Takeaways:

  • What it means to be a difference maker.

In our lives, each and every one of us has the opportunity to be a hero to someone else. Despite often not seeing ourselves in this light, this is a remarkable way to make a difference on the world around us. We often believe that if we can achieve the next thing: the promotion, the raise, the title – we can start to become a difference maker. The reality of our situation is that we can begin to be a hero to someone right now from the place in which we stand.

  • Success and Significance are Two Sides of the Same Coin

We all want to do well. But as we grow into our lives and careers it’s crucially important that we remember to do good. We can be successful in our businesses and careers, but if we don’t take those opportunities to positively impact those around us, we can squander the influence that we build as our success grows. When you can grow in significance, your success grows alongside.

  • Lead With Your Passion

Your passions are a gift, and they are not given without great care. When you allow yourself to be guided by your passions, your work becomes a service to the world. Truett Cathy would often speak on the idea that being guided by a passion can lead to you never work a day in your life, but have an incredibly meaningful business career. Success and Significance are a side effect from the hard work of living out our passions.

Three takeaways:

  1. Unlock the mystery of the Other box!

In marketing research, one of the most common questions is “How did you hear about us?” Often times, the most consistent response is not TV, billboards, radio, print, or social media. But rather, it’s the elusive “Other”. More times than not, “Other” is a stand-in for positive word of mouth. The co-founder of Intuit, Scott Cook, says, “a brand is no longer what it tells customers it is. A brand is what customers tell other customers it is.” For this reason, it’s imperative that companies find out the answer to the following two questions:

  • What do you want to be known for?
  • What are you known for?

These questions remove the enigmatic mystery of the Other box and answering them will grow your business and career.

  1. What do you want to be known FOR? | What are you known FOR?

In addition to unlocking the Other box, the answers to these 2 questions will help grow your business and career. The first question (“What do you want to be known for?”) is important for any business or organization to ask internally. This can be polled formally or informally by asking your team. What is your unique proposition? What is your compelling vision? If there’s confusion in the office space, then there’s going to be confusion in the marketplace. You can’t be known for everything, but you can be known for something. The 2nd question (“What are you known for?”) is an external one. This is the customer’s reflection on how you’re doing. This will tell you how your compelling vision is being experienced. When what you want to be known for is what you are known for, then you can leverage the Other box. There is no perfect company out there, but we should work to shrink the gap between the answers of those two questions so that we are well-aligned.

  1. There are 4 groups to be FOR.

It’s no longer about being the best company in the world. It’s about being the best company for the world. As an organization or business, you can be for the customer, team, community or you. When it comes to the customer, businesses must move from customer service to customer engagement. Become a fan of the customer (not the other way around) by proactively and personally engaging with them via social media. The customer is eventually treated like the team is treated by the higher-ups. The culture of the team is transferred to the customer, which is why it’s important to be for your team. As for the community, it’s important that businesses find their purpose. If your sole purpose is to stay in business, then you won’t. Brands have to be meaningful for the community. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you are a group to be for. You have to remain inspired because nothing big happens without inspiration. Identify some systematic ways to stay inspired like consistently getting enough rest. Be known for being for the person right in front of me.

Three takeaways:

1. Get ahead of deadlines.

It’s wise to not view a deadline as the actual endpoint. As a principle, try to put a week ahead of any given deadline to complete the task. This might not always be possible, but it pays dividends in major ways. First, you’ll produce better quality content because you’re not working from a place of desperation and stress. Secondly, it communicates to those involved that you take the task at hand seriously and you are committed to the process. Finally, it provides breathing room to make any last-minute changes and sit with the work for a while. If you push early and are perhaps a bit uncomfortable on the front end, then it saves a world of stress and anxiety on the backend. This is valuable advice for everything from project management to appointments. Be a good steward of your own ideas and try your best to beat deadlines by a week.

2. Visualize your audience and write to them.

When writing a book, Pastor Mark Batterson makes a point to pray for the people who will read his words. As leaders, religious or not, we should think of the end-user and focus on engaging them effectively with our product or service. If we shift the focus from ourselves onto the consumers, then we are free to think about how we can best serve them and not be bogged down by self-imposed notions of perfectionism. By not fixating on our insecurities, we’re able to improve the quality of our offering and better help people.

3. Location, Location, Location

Often times, we underestimate the value of very basic, tangible items and circumstances in our daily workflow. One such thing is location. Location, location, location! This is not just the number one rule in real estate, but also when it comes to finding a “home” in the creative process. Having consistency in your environment communicates to your body and mind that this is a place where work gets done. Frequently, bringing an idea to fruition can feel like a long, arduous, and grueling marathon. It’s important then in those times, to have an area, space or work site routine that will enable you to feel as though you are ‘picking up the baton’ from where you left it previously.

Three Takeaways

1. Assess what you can hand off.

If you have a team who you trust to take on more responsibility (and you should), see what job duties you can pass to them. Handing off your responsibilities can free you up for the new opportunities. Your success will be governed by the strength of your team.

2. Focus on clarity

The first 90 days of trying something new can look murky. You are in the process of figuring it all out and don’t always have the big picture. As you walk through this phase, stay focused on clarity. Ask yourself and the team these questions: What does success look like in the short term? What does it look like in the long term? What is my/our unique contribution? You and your team will go further if everyone knows what success looks like and how they play into accomplishing those goals.

3. Find some margin and wait 24 hours  Good ideas will come when you make room for them. Put some time on your calendar to allow ideas to grow. In today’s episode, Jeff Henderson mentioned using the library to take some time to unplug and allow yourself to think. Once you have that idea, you need a 24-hour waiting period. Sometimes, that once great idea you thought you had doesn’t hold up over time. Before you share that idea, let it marinate and then find a trusted, positive small group of people to share your idea with.
