4 Ways to Prove You’re Ready for Advancement

Ah, the fresh start of a new year. Whether or not you believe in resolutions, it’s hard not to dream and plan for all the things you want to accomplish over the next 12 months. According to Inc., in 2019, 16% of people want to find a new job this year, 32% of people want to earn more money, and 26% of people want to grow their skill set.

What does this mean for you?

It means that you, and probably your other coworkers, are looking to make moves at work this year. You might know that you’re ready to take on a new challenge, but how do you show your leaders? Especially if you’re not the only one in the office hoping for a promotion. Here are four ways.

Are you killing it now?

Before you move onto the next role, you have to be doing a phenomenal job where you are. How was your year-end-review with your leader? Was their feedback overwhelmingly positive? Take their suggested areas of improvement to heart.

If you work in a culture without a formal feedback, like annual reviews, go and find it. Schedule 30 minutes with your leader and ask them about your strengths and weaknesses and what you can do to make 2019 your most valuable year yet. It’s not a time to pitch a promotion for yourself, it’s a time to truly care about being the best where you are right now.

Where do you add the most value?

Value, in the simplest definition, is what you get for what you pay. Find the value that you bring to your company: What are you giving versus what you cost? The more value you create, the more people will trust you with opportunities.

What is your greatest skill set?

In order to know what your next best move is, you need to know where you thrive. What are the things that you’re praised the most for? Being a thought leader, people leader or taskmaster? Make sure your next role has more of whatever that is.

What’s your personal brand?

Whether you know it or not, you have a personal brand. It can be unpleasant to think about, but the reality is that your personal brand is constantly being evaluated by others. Instead of pretending that it’s not, know yours and find ways to elevate it.

Not sure how to find your personal brand? We have a free assessment.

We know that there are big things in store for you this year, launcher. If you ask yourself these four questions and take your findings to heart, you’ll already be on your way to making 2019 your best year yet.
