One of the biggest obstacles to launching—if not the biggest—is simply getting started.
At Launch Youniversity, we hear from people all the time who tell us they want to start a blog, but they can’t afford a web designer. Or, they want to start a podcast, but they don’t know how to find an audio editor or how to buy the right microphone. Or, maybe they want to start a motivational YouTube channel, but they can’t yet afford a 4K camera; and they don’t have a nice studio in which to film. And sometimes, they have everything they need…except for an audience with which to share it.

Many ideas never make it off the table because that’s all it is: an idea. Sustainable ideas are an answer to a problem or need; and, as launchers, it’s important we define a problem and establish a solution with our ideas. Hannah Gronowski saw a need in her community, to inspire millennials to live purposeful lives. With a little fear and trepidation, she launched Generation Distinct. She didn’t know what direction it would take, nor did she have all the players; but, she leapt into entrepreneurship and has learned valuable insights along her journey. 1. Share your idea with others.
Do you have an idea, but you’re not quite sure what to do next? This is a great time to get others involved. Like Hannah shared in today’s podcast, at Generation Distinct’s inception, she involved a lot of people in the early stages to get feedback on her idea. Start sharing your idea with community leaders and people you trust to refine it and take it to the next level.
2. Don’t wait for permission.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is start. Often, people wait for the “perfect” timing or strategy, but it’s better to start and improve rather than not start at all. Some of the best ideas are the ones with humble beginnings. There will be plenty of time to clarify your vision.
3. Focus on one area.
It’s impossible to excel in all areas of your business; so instead, focus on one area to improve before moving on to the next. Then, invite other players to do the things you don’t excel in.

1. Give yourself some breathing room. It’s easy for us as leaders to see the launch date as the finish line, but really, it’s just the beginning. After launch, take some time to pause and assess your situation: a lot of the problems that might happen on opening day may not need solving and might right themselves on their own. If you’re quick to make changes, you might be adding unnecessary work to your list of things to do.
2. Celebrate every win. As a leader, it’s important for your team to see you celebrate all your wins. You set the tone for your team, so remember to take some time to remind yourself why you’ve launched this idea in the first place. Check in with yourself and ask, “Am I enjoying this? Am I feeling more stressed than anything else?” Celebrating your wins will help you stay the course when things get tough down the road.
3. Ask questions instead of solving problems. People will naturally come to you, their leader, for wise counsel. Instead of spouting off ideas and decisions anytime you’re asked, ask your team questions about the best way to solve a current problem together. By getting the whole team involved, you’re ensuring they’re growing in this process, too.
