Summary:

Shop owners and clothing designers, Ann and Sid Mashburn, join host, Jeff Henderson, on the Launch Youniversity podcast. Together, they share how their collective experiences — Sid going from a small town Mississippi native to one of the most sought-after designers and Ann’s real life The Devil Wears Prada experience at Vogue — have paved the way to where they are now — entrepreneurs who are constantly learning, growing, and creating. In today’s episode, you’ll hear their wisdom on leadership, decision making, and cultivating the right culture.

Welcome to episode 129 of the Launch Youniversity Podcast.

Outliers: The Story of Success

Three Takeaways:

  • Sometimes, closed doors force you into open ones. In the podcast, Sid Mashburn shared how a closed door, for him, meant getting fired. That led to a new beginning in Atlanta. An ended opportunity may feel like heartbreak in the moment, but it’s more than likely leading you to a better one.
  • Things go stale when you don’t create. You might not like what you create, nor will your creations always become a finished product, but remember, creativity is like a muscle — it has to be exercised to grow.

  • Great designers are great noticers. Look around — inspiration is everywhere. Whether it’s your environment or something you admire from someone else, be open to being inspired anywhere at any time.

Summary:

Leaders take a lot of risks, and sometimes those risks lead to mistakes. If you’re a good leader, you take the time to apologize for those mistakes. If you’re a bad leader…well, you get the picture. On today’s episode, our host, Jeff Henderson, is joined with our mentors, Kevin Jennings and David Farmer, to talk about the anatomy of an apology and how, if done correctly, apologizing can communicate humility, vulnerability, and enrich the culture of your team.

Three Takeaways:

  • Authentic leadership starts with an apology. As a leader, you’re bound to make mistakes along the way. Stop and apologize for those mistakes. When you apologize, you’re not only building a strong team culture, but you’re also setting the tone for the team. A tone that says you’re not perfect, you make mistakes, and you’re aware enough to know that and that it’s OK for others to make mistakes, too.
  • Explanations undermine your apology. If you follow up an apology with an explanation about why you made the mistake, it negates the entire apology. Don’t do that. Apologize and then listen quietly. Anything else you say at this time could be viewed as an excuse. There will (hopefully) be another time when you can explain your actions.
  • Check your pride. If you find you’re constantly hesitant to apologize, your pride may be at play (and we all know what happens when we let pride take the lead). Owning your need to apologize for a wrongdoing communicates vulnerability and humility. If you get into the habit of avoiding saying sorry, your team and business will suffer, leading to higher turnover rates and a loss of trust in your leadership.

Summary:

Most of us want our businesses to thrive, so we tend to buckle down and apply hyper focus to the tasks that lay before us. That approach, however, may be holding you back. On today’s episode, our host, David Farmer, joins Launch Youniversity mentor, Shane Benson, to talk about the enterprise mindset — what it is, what it’s not, how it can help your business grow, and how it can strengthen the connection of your team with other departments within your organization.

Three Takeaways:

  • Think about how the work you do connects to the business as a whole. Hyper focusing on the task at hand without considering the other moving parts will be detrimental to your business’s overall goal. Always keep the business in mind while doing your work.
  • Influence others through T-shaped leadership. Shane shares a concept called T-shaped leadership, which centers on talking to other people and departments for a broad scope of the business while also committing to being an expert in your field. A harmonious blend of these two approaches will advance your organization tremendously.
  • Clarify, focus, and align. These three thoughts can help you get a pulse on your business and help you ask important questions, such as, “Where are we headed as a business? What can we do to get there? How do we ensure we’re moving together?”

Summary:

Your idea is only as good as its sustainability. At Launch Youniversity, we love connecting you with people who are in the same phase you’re in during the launch process. We also understand there are some of you who are wondering what life after launch looks like. Today, our mentors, Shane Benson and Jeff Henderson, share three principles to guarantee your life after launch is sustainable, that you’re enjoying the work you’re doing, and that your team is growing in the process.

Three Takeaways:

1. Give yourself some breathing room. It’s easy for us as leaders to see the launch date as the finish line, but really, it’s just the beginning. After launch, take some time to pause and assess your situation: a lot of the problems that might happen on opening day may not need solving and might right themselves on their own. If you’re quick to make changes, you might be adding unnecessary work to your list of things to do.

2. Celebrate every win. As a leader, it’s important for your team to see you celebrate all your wins. You set the tone for your team, so remember to take some time to remind yourself why you’ve launched this idea in the first place. Check in with yourself and ask, “Am I enjoying this? Am I feeling more stressed than anything else?” Celebrating your wins will help you stay the course when things get tough down the road.

3. Ask questions instead of solving problems. People will naturally come to you, their leader, for wise counsel. Instead of spouting off ideas and decisions anytime you’re asked, ask your team questions about the best way to solve a current problem together. By getting the whole team involved, you’re ensuring they’re growing in this process, too.
