Summary:

We’ve officially reached the halfway point of 2018 and for many of us, it’s the perfect time to review the goals we set at the beginning of the year. Maybe you haven’t made as much progress as you would’ve liked this far into the year. Maybe you’ve completed your goals and you’re wondering what’s next. No matter what side you land on, don’t worry — there’s no time like right now to recommit or make adjustments to your plans.

Today, we hear from three of Launch Youniversity’s mentors: David Farmer, Shane Benson, and Jeff Henderson, who will discuss the best ways to take stock of your year so far and set a clear path to where you’re headed.

Rocket Fuel [Goal Setting Guide]

Success Is Not An Accident by Tommy Newberry

Elevator Pitch

Ask us a question!

Three Takeaways:

1. Take time to rest and reflect on your wins.

Negative feedback usually outweighs the positive feedback you receive no matter how much someone loves you or your idea. When you take time to rest, it helps you reprioritize the goals you set for yourself and focus on celebrating the positive outcomes. Take a half day or full day to reflect on the year so far. Ask yourself,
“What went well?”
“What needs improvement?”
“Where do I go from here?”

2. Establish morning and nighttime success rituals.

Rituals give structure to the areas of your life you’d like to see improvement. When you stick to a morning ritual, it will set you up for success for the entire day. Doing a nighttime ritual takes the friction out of the next day and sets you up for even greater success. Planning your day (and upcoming week and months, for that matter) ensures you make time for the things that truly matter to you, including not only your goals, but for your family and self-care, too.

3. Start from where you are right now.

There’s nothing magical about January 1. Review the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. Do those goals still matter to you? Is this still the right plan? If so, start (or restart) now. Jeff Henderson shared a great idea that could help you recommit to your goals: Jeff takes the first of every month and spends 10 days trying something new, whether it’s doing yoga for 10 days or eating a meat-free diet for 10 days. You can take this same concept and apply it to your idea — maybe it’ll motivate you to try a new and fresh approach.

SUMMARY:

If you’re learning to play an instrument, 1 hour of practice over the course of 10 days is much more effective than 10 hours of practice in 1 day. Interesting, right? That’s because small steps, consistently taken, over a long amount of time is how humans are wired to learn, grow and change best. Our daily rituals and habits are a key component in helping us do all of those things. They don’t need to be two hours long, but they need to be consistent and manageable. On today’s episode, Kevin and Jeff share their daily rituals and ways that you can develop your own in 2018.

THREE TAKEAWAYS:

1. Your night ritual matters just as much as your morning one.

Google “early morning routines of successful people” and you’ll find hundreds of articles, maybe even thousands. And for good reason, a smart morning routine is a proven way to mentally set yourself up for a happy and productive day. But the mornings tends to get all the credit while we forget about the evenings. Instead of falling asleep on the couch watching Jimmy Fallon, create an evening ritual. It could be laying out your workout clothes for the next day, grinding coffee beans, bookmarking your next day’s devotional, making your lunch, etc. A great day begins the night before.

2. Your rituals are for you.

Don’t just go through the motions of a ritual because books and articles and podcasts told you to do so. Whether it’s a morning, work day, driving or evening ritual… consider how you want to feel when the ritual is over. Inspired and encouraged? Organized and prepared? Customize your plan and ritual to practices that will help you feel that.

3. You already have rituals.

You might be thinking “I don’t have any rituals and I don’t have time to add any.” But you do. What are the things that you do on a consistent basis? Do you watch 2 or 3 hours of TV after dinner? Do you read when your kids go to bed? Do you stop for coffee most mornings? Those are rituals. Take a look at what your rituals already are and assess if they’re working for you. If not, assign their time to something else that will.

THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS:

1. Calendar plan once per week.

Sundays are known as meal prep days for a lot of people, but what about calendar planning? Often, we look at our big picture goals, but we don’t do the work to break them down into realistic small goals. The way David combats this is with a weekly calendar planning ritual.

First, he looks at his goals for the quarter. Then, he breaks them down by month. Finally, each Sunday, he sees what he needs to accomplish over the week and breaks it down into days. He puts those tasks on his calendar and blocks out the time to do it.

2. Do what only you can do.

Shane calls this “finding your genius.” It’s the place where passion and skill collide. For Shane, he’d like to manage the family finances, but over time he’s found that he doesn’t really like doing it and that his wife is better at it. Instead, Shane’s gifting is goal-setting and encouragement, so that’s what he puts his focus on. When you’re operating in your genius and doing what only you can do, you’ll not only find personal fulfillment but it’s where you’ll make the biggest contributions to those around you.

3. Get rid of low payback activities.

Evaluate the activities in your life that offer little payback on getting you closer to the things you want to accomplish and either eliminate them or put boundaries on them. Social media is a prime example of how easy it is to get carried away in a low payback activity. There’s a bunch of apps you can download that help you track your social media time and put parameters on it. Or, you can choose 1 or 2 times a day where you give yourself a specific amount of time to check updates.
